Child dies, man allegedly driving under the influence of drugs

California drivers who are arrested for suspicion of impairment will likely be looking for ways to defend themselves against the charges. A 41-year-old man was recently arrested for driving under the influence of drugs. Sadly, a child's life was lost in the crash that led to the man's arrest.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the driver veered across the centerline into the lanes of southbound traffic on Sierra Highway. A head-on crash with a dump truck whose driver could not avoid a collision was the result. A 5-year-old child who was an unrestrained passenger in the first vehicle died at the accident scene. Ensuring the safety of the child by fastening her safety belt was also the responsibility of the accused driver.

Reportedly, the injuries to the driver of the car were major, and a medical helicopter rushed him to a hospital. Authorities say the injuries suffered by a woman who was also a passenger in his vehicle were minor, and those suffered by the other driver were moderate. Paramedics rushed them both to medical facilities for treatment of their injuries. The media report of the accident did not disclose whether any of the car occupants were related.

The methods and procedures used to establish his impairment are unknown, and if the driver retains the services of an experienced criminal defense attorney, these aspects will play a significant role. A lawyer who is skilled in protecting the rights of those accused of DUI will examine the charges of driving under the influence along with the available evidence. A skilled attorney can work on a strategy that may lead to the best possible outcome under the circumstances.
