Driving under the influence suspected in crash injuring passenger

In California, there is no sympathy for drunk drivers, and authorities prosecute such offenders aggressively. A conviction on DUI charges can lead to license suspension, hefty fines and even time behind bars. The California Highway Patrol is investigating an accident in which a passenger suffered serious injuries. The operator of the vehicle was charged with driving under the influence.

Authorities say the crash occurred shortly after noon on a recent Saturday. A preliminary accident report indicates that a sedan on Highway 49 was heading north. Officials suspect that something inside the car distracted the driver's attention. The car veered to the right, left the roadway and slammed into an embankment after striking a culvert.

This caused the vehicle to roll over, ejecting the 48-year-old passenger. Reportedly, the injuries he suffered were serious. CHP reported no injuries suffered by the driver of the vehicle, and it is unclear if he was transported to a medical facility. It is also not clear when and how any blood alcohol test to determine the driver's level of intoxication was determined.

Crashing a vehicle while driving under the influence can have serious consequences that can be exacerbated if the accident causes injuries to another party. The most logical step for anyone in this situation would be to retain the services of an experienced criminal defense attorney. A California lawyer who focuses on defending those who face DUI charges can scrutinize the charges and the evidence held by the prosecution. After investigating the underlying details surrounding the case, the lawyer can devise a defense strategy for achieving the best possible outcome.
