Wrong way driver faces DUI charge after head-on crash

The California Highway Patrol reported that a sheriff's deputy responded after receiving an alert about a wrong-way driver in North Hollywood shortly after 3 p.m. on a recent Tuesday. What followed landed one person behind bars on a DUI charge. The deputy located the suspect approaching in his lane. After avoiding contact with that car, he made a U-turn and followed the wrong-way driver. However, he could not pull the driver over before a collision with another vehicle occurred.

Reportedly, the wrong way driver was a 26-year-old man who was traveling alone. He crashed head-on into another sedan operated by an 18-year-old. This driver and his three passengers -- one 17-year-old and two 18-year-olds -- all suffered severe injuries, and they were rushed to the hospital. The wrong way driver was uninjured.

Authorities said that driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. There is no indication of the driver's level of intoxication at the time of the crash, and how or when it was determined. Reportedly, he was booked into the Fresno County jail.

This California driver will likely be focusing on his defense against the DUI charge for which he was locked up. The most appropriate step would be to retain the services of an experienced DUI defense attorney who can scrutinize the charges and assess the procedures used to determine the accused driver's blood alcohol level. The driver will get the opportunity to challenge the allegations made against him. A conviction can be obtained only if -- and when -- the prosecution has proved guilt beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
