San Jose man faces DUI charge after fatal Santa Clara collision

Service on the light rail tracks of the Valley Transportation Authority in Santa Clara had to be suspended while an accident investigation was underway on a recent Sunday. This was caused by a fatal crash that left one vehicle on the VTA tracks. A 34-year-old California man is facing a DUI charge after the accident claimed the life of another driver.

According to a police report, a 65-year-old Sunnyvale woman was northbound on a local road, making a turn onto a westbound street. An eastbound pickup truck smashed into the woman's car as she was turning. The truck was operated by the man who was subsequently accused of drunk driving.

The woman suffered fatal injuries at the accident scene. The pickup driver suffered minor injuries for which he received treatment at a hospital. Reportedly, a passenger in the pickup was also injured. The driver is now facing one count of vehicular manslaughter, along with two charges of injury caused by driving under the influence of alcohol.

This man is fully entitled to legal representation to contest the DUI charge. A lawyer will examine the details of how and when it was determined that the driver was intoxicated, and scrutinize whether applicable procedures were carried out in the manner prescribed by California law. The defendant will have the right to challenge any evidence presented by the prosecution, and a conviction can only be secured if -- and when -- his guilt is proved beyond a reasonable doubt in a criminal courtroom.
