Uber driver accused of driving under the influence of alcohol

Many California residents make use of services such as Uber to drive them home safely after they have consumed alcohol. One passenger claims that she was transported by a Uber driver who was driving under the influence of alcohol. The 22-year-old driver was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving and speeding.

According to the 19-year-old passenger, she called for Uber transport at approximately 1 a.m. on New Year's Day. She claims to have felt uneasy with the driver's rate of speed. She alleges that she saw that he was driving at 80 mph. and that her request for him to slow down was ignored. The Uber vehicle then reportedly smashed into another car and flipped over.

The passenger was reportedly pulled out of the wreck by good Samaritans. California Highway Patrol officers arrived at the accident scene, and a field sobriety test was administered to the driver. A family member of the passenger said that, after a Breathalyzer test was done, CHP officers told bystanders that the driver was drunk. He was handcuffed and taken into custody.

Although this California driver has not had the opportunity to defend himself in a court of law, he is already suffering the consequences of the driving under the influence of alcohol allegations. His employers reported that he has been permanently barred from using the Uber platform. However, he will have the opportunity to challenge the evidence presented by the prosecutors when his case goes to trial. No conviction is possible absent proof that is found to be beyond a reasonable doubt. He also retains the right to seek the counsel of an experienced criminal defense attorney.
