DUI charge: Costa Mesa driver suspected of drunk driving

California drivers who are accused of driving under the influence of alcohol are often convicted by the public before the accused person has even been formally charged or had the opportunity to defend him or herself in court. Unfortunately, such prejudice can have a negative impact on a person's life -- even if that person is never convicted of the DUI charge. For this reason, some suggest it is beneficial to retain the services of an experienced DUI defense attorney even before formal charges are filed.

A 27-year-old man was suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol when he crashed his vehicle into a tree on a recent Saturday. The Costa Mesa police reported that the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed when he lost control of his vehicle and left the roadway. After damaging about 30 feet of the fence of a golf course in Orange County, he smashed into a tree before the car was engulfed in flames.

Officers reportedly also suspected that the driver was involved in an earlier vehicle accident on State Route 55 and that the crash on the golf course occurred while he was allegedly fleeing the scene of the other collision. It is further alleged that the driver was attempting to flee the scene of the second wreck when he was apprehended and arrested. He reportedly suffered no more than minor injuries.

With the support of an experienced criminal defense attorney, this California driver's legal rights can be protected. An attorney will examine the accusations and suspicions of the police and prepare a strong defense in the event of formal charges being filed. No mention was made of when and how officials determined that the driver may have been impaired and to what degree. The procedures to determine the level of intoxication and the arrest procedures can play an important part in the defense against a DUI charge.
