DUI charge: Driver suspected of gross vehicular manslaughter, DUI

A 53-year-old driver triggered a pursuit by the California Highway Patrol when he allegedly fled the scene after striking a police vehicle. When the chase started, the man was reportedly wanted for a traffic violation. However, this all changed when the pursuit ended in a collision in which one person died. The man was arrested on a suspicion of DUI charge along with suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter.

A CHP report indicates that the chase started in the late afternoon of Christmas Day on State Route 60, and the fleeing driver was westbound. When the driver allegedly sped through an intersection in Moreno Valley, his vehicle smashed into a car that was occupied by a driver and a passenger. Both occupants of the car reportedly suffered serious injuries, and they were rushed to a hospital. Sadly the 76-year-old passenger passed away later.

The fleeing driver was also injured, and he was arrested before he was taken to the hospital. Details of his injuries were not published. CHP said the accident investigation is ongoing.

When a California driver is facing a DUI charge, he or she remains innocent in the eyes of the law until and unless the prosecution can prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Utilizing the services of an experienced DUI defense attorney is typically a smart choice. The lawyer can help safeguard an accused person's right to fair and impartial treatment. Each case is unique and depends upon the underlying facts and circumstances, but a seasoned criminal defense attorney knows what to look for and how to use what is discovered to advocate for the best interests of the client.
