DUI charge follows crash that could have been fatal

The California Highway Patrol reported that a 21-year-old woman who is suspected of drunk driving was fortunate not to have lost her life in a recent car accident. She is facing a DUI charge after crashing into the guardrail of Interstate 805 just before 5:30 a.m. on a recent Thursday. The driver suffered only minor injuries.

An accident report states that the driver was southbound on the roadway when her car veered left and smashed into the guardrail. The collision was head-on, and the guardrail pierced through the car's engine compartment. It missed the driver by inches as it passed by her and through the back window. Officers suspected that the driver had been drinking, and she was booked into a detention facility on bail of $2,500.

No details about the level of intoxication or the methods used to determine impairment were provided. However, officers said speeding and alcohol were likely factors in the accident. While the cause of the crash is still under investigation, the accused driver and her defense counsel are likely considering the most appropriate steps to take in her defense against the DUI charges.

Each case involving a DUI charge is unique in relation to the specific circumstances and the applicable laws. The playing field can be leveled by retaining the services of an experienced criminal defense attorney. Any person who is accused of driving under the influence of alcohol has certain legal rights under California law, and those rights can be used to his or her advantage in defending against charges that could have severe consequences if a conviction is obtained by government prosecutors.
