Marine accused of driving under the influence of alcohol

It is always sad to learn of an accident in which an alleged drunk driver may have been responsible for the deaths of several other people. A 21-year-old Marine is being accused of driving under the influence of alcohol when he recently crashed on California State Route 163. After pleading not guilty to several charges from where he is hospitalized, he is being held on a bail of $3 million.

It was reported that the young man ignored pleas by his friends not to drive after consuming several alcoholic drinks on a recent evening. He allegedly got behind the wheel of his pickup truck and took off in a southern direction in the northbound lanes. He apparently crashed head-on into a northbound vehicle carrying five medical students.

The driver and one passenger were reportedly killed in the collision, and three other passengers suffered serious injuries. One of them apparently suffered severe brain trauma. The details of the injuries of the Marine are unknown. The district attorney reported that the Marine was subjected to two breath tests 40 minutes after the accident. The readings of the tests apparently showed .145 and .149 percent respectively, indicating a level exceeding the legal limit.

If this driver is convicted on the charges -- which include murder, gross vehicular manslaughter and DUI charges -- he could reportedly face at least 47 years in jail. Any California driver who is accused of driving under the influence of alcohol and faces felony charges may benefit greatly from the services of an experienced criminal defense attorney. Taking into consideration the circumstances of the accident and the evidence that prosecutors intend to offer in court, a lawyer will help prepare and present a defense that will focus on protecting the rights of the accused driver and seeks the most favorable result obtainable.
