Conviction on DUI charge of forklift driver going backwards

When California drivers face charges related to driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, they may need the services of experienced criminal defense attorneys to help protect their rights and to assist them with building defenses against DUI charges. The consequences of such charges can vary, and the nature of the offenses may determine the outcomes. Being convicted of a DUI charge will likely have a detrimental impact on an accused person's life.

A man from Southern California was recently convicted after he was found to have been responsible for the deaths of two people and the severe injuries suffered by two others. Court documents state that the man crashed into a car while he was driving a forklift weighing 12,000 pounds. It was determined that the forklift driver was under the influence of methamphetamine when he drove backward along a road in Santa Maria at a speed of 30 mph.

He apparently crossed the center line and smashed into a car in the opposite lane. The fatal accident caused the death of two occupants of the car and left two others seriously injured. The jury found the 38-year-old forklift driver guilty of manslaughter, reckless driving and drunken driving. The latter two charges included the additional charge of causing bodily injury.

It was reported that the man's sentence may include incarceration for as many as 15 years. An attorney who focuses on defending the accused against DUI charges in California courtrooms will use his or her experience to the benefit of his or her clients. This may limit the impact a conviction for a DUI charge has on the life of an accused person. Evidence presented by the prosecutors may be challenged, and a guilty verdict is only possible once guilt has been proved beyond any reasonable doubt.
