California driver sentenced to 25 years in prison on DUI charge

California drivers who choose to drive while under the influence of alcohol and drugs may not consider the potential consequences at that time. However, when accidents are caused by drunk drivers, there is certainly a lot at stake. This is especially true when the accident involves fatalities and/or severe injuries. Drivers who have to defend a DUI charge in court will likely need the assistance of an experienced and competent defense attorney to protect their rights.

A 26-year-old California driver recently received a 25-year prison-sentence for causing a fatal accident in Oct. 2013. The California Highway Patrol reported that the man was southbound on Highway 121, accompanied by a passenger, when he attempted to overtake another car on a curve. He was unable to see approaching traffic and apparently smashed head-on into a northbound vehicle.

Authorities said that the passenger in the first car was killed, and the injuries to the driver of the second car included multiple leg fractures. The 5-year-old daughter of this driver suffered injuries that apparently caused permanent paralysis. The prosecutor noted that both father and daughter had to undergo several surgical procedures. It was ultimately determined that the driver was intoxicated and under the influence of drugs at the time of the accident.

Motorists in California who are facing a DUI charge after an accident that caused death and injuries may benefit from being proactive in seeking the advice of a criminal defense professional who will explain the legalities of every charge. Whatever the circumstances of the case, the accused person will remain innocent before the court until -- and only if -- prosecutors can actually prove his or her guilt beyond reasonable doubt. However, the seriousness with which the California judicial system regards these cases underscores the need for careful attention and a carefully devised defense strategy.
