DUI charge follows alleged drugged driver's crash into cyclists

Facing a DUI charge in California could have a devastating effect on one’s future. It is not uncommon for the public to find a person guilty on accusations only, without allowing the person his or right to defense in a court of law. It is true that the consequences of a DUI charge are multiplied when there were injuries or fatalities in an accident that was caused by an alleged impaired driver.

A 49-year-old woman was recently arrested after officials say they determined that she was impaired by drugs when she smashed her car into a bundle of cyclists on Fiesta Island Road. The cyclists were reported to have just concluded their training session when they were hit by the alleged drugged driver. It was reported that two cyclists struck the windshield and suffered facial bone fractures and a perforated lung respectively after they were pinned by the jagged glass.

A cyclist who suffered arm and leg injuries asserted that the estimated speed of the car was between 30 and 40 mph in a zone where the speed limit is between 10 and 15 mph. According to court records obtained, it was reported that the woman has a history of drug-related charges. Upon her recent arrest, she was charged with operating a vehicle while impaired by controlled substances, along with possession of such substances.

California drivers who are arrested and booked on a DUI charge may need the services of an experienced professional to counsel them in the legalities of such a charge. It is important for the alleged DUI driver to understand the individual charges, along with his or her legal rights, in order to better prepare for defense against the charges brought by the prosecutor. Professional guidance may ensure the proper presentation of the defense that may lead to the best possible outcome.
