Chaos on Highway 101 leaves driver with suspected DUI charge

There may be a lot at stake when a California driver is suspected of drunk driving. Being arrested for drunk driving may lead to one’s driving privileges being suspended. Even without a conviction, a DUI charge could affect a person’s life, but a successful defense in court may help to minimize the potential impact of a DUI charge.

A 22-year old man is currently behind bars after allegedly causing havoc on Highway 101 in the early morning hours of a recent Saturday. Authorities were reportedly alerted by a witness who saw a pickup van driving the wrong way on southbound Highway 101. The California Highway Patrol reported that after allegedly side-swiping a bus and a car, the pickup truck smashed into a Dodge. A Volkswagen that apparently swerved to avoid crashing into the wrong-way driver went off the road and flipped over.

The driver of the Dodge was reported to be without severe injuries, but his passenger was trapped in the car and passed away at the accident scene. Neither the driver, nor the passengers of the bus were injured, and CHP reported that the drivers of the two other cars suffered non-serious injuries. The suspected drunk driver was taken into custody after receiving treatment for injuries that included fractured ribs. He is now facing a suspected DUI charge, along with a manslaughter charge.

The media report makes no mention of how and under what circumstances toxicology tests were performed, and with this charge being suspected DUI, such details may form an important part of upcoming court procedures. A California driver who is facing a suspected DUI charge may benefit from obtaining professional help to pursue the minimizing of any penalties. It is important to remember that, unless the prosecution can prove the guilt of the accused beyond any reasonable doubt, a guilty verdict cannot be obtained.
