Driver faces DUI charge after allegedly killing homeless man

Most California drivers likely recognize the devastating consequences a drunk driving charge could have on their lives. However, catastrophic injuries and fatalities caused by drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs still occur on a daily basis. A DUI charge typically follows such an accident, which can be detrimental to the future of the accused.

A 27-year-old man is facing several charges after the recent death of a homeless San Francisco man. The driver, who is suspected of drunk driving, was reportedly coming off Highway 80 when his vehicle left the road. California Highway Patrol reported that the vehicle careened toward an embankment, allegedly killing the homeless man who was asleep on the ground.

The victim’s death was declared at the accident scene, and the driver of the car was transported to a hospital for treatment of non-serious injuries. The driver was arrested when he was released from the medical center and was charged with suspected felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter. The man remains in custody on bail of $700,000.

When a California driver faces a DUI charge, the individual may want to take immediate steps to protect his or her interests. Even before being able to present defense in a court, the suspect’s driving privileges may be suspended. An individual facing a DUI charge could benefit from understanding the details of each of the formal charges. The prosecutors have to prove each element beyond a reasonable doubt, but the accused individual will be afforded a reasonable opportunity to challenge the evidence and confront witnesses.
