California driver may face DUI charge after crash in parking lot

Drivers in California may find that there is a lot at stake when they are held on charges of suspicion of DUI. Although an individual has the right to protect his or her interests in a court of law, a suspected drunk driver may lose his or her freedom. In addition to any fines and jail time that result from a DUI charge, an individual's driving privileges may also be suspended.

After a recent incident in a Palm Desert parking lot, a 23-year-old Coachella man may face such consequences. According to a statement by the police, the man and his passenger fled on foot after smashing into a vehicle. They were arrested not far from the accident scene. Police searched the vehicle and found a rifle and ammunition magazine, and although the media report does not mention blood alcohol content levels or field sobriety tests, both men were suspected of being impaired.

The driver was charged with possession of a firearm and ammunition, hit and run and DUI suspicion, and his bail was set at $20,000. The passenger was cited $1,100 for suspected public intoxication. He was released on the same day. The accused driver may want to be proactive in seeking advice on how best to protect his interests in court.

California residents who face a possible DUI charge have the right to challenge the evidence offered by prosecutors. While it remains to be seen what the outcome of the charges in this case will be, the accused driver will have the opportunity to work toward minimizing the impact of the charges. Before a guilty verdict can be obtained, prosecutors have to prove their case according to the criminal justice system’s strict requirements.
