DUI charge follows California driver crashing into guardrail

When a California driver is arrested for suspected drunk driving, it is a far cry from a conviction. However, the public sometimes assumes that driver's guilt long before the person has had the opportunity to defend himself or herself in a court of law. If found guilty on a DUI charge, though, the effect on one's personal life could be devastating.

The alleged irregular weaving of a car through traffic was reported to police on a recent Monday afternoon. The motorist claimed that the driver had almost caused an accident. California Highway Patrol responded and soon located the northbound car on Highway 101. After following if for a short distance, the CHP officer apparently witnessed the vehicle swerving toward the right and striking the guardrail. It then went over an embankment and flipped.

The 65-year-old driver was the only occupant of the car and was taken to a medical center after suffering non life-threatening injuries. The driver was suspected of driving while under the influence of alcohol, and he was arrested. The media report made no mention of a blood alcohol test or the result of any such test.

If a California driver is charged with a DUI charge, his or her driver's license could be suspended. A DUI conviction could result in heavy fines along with jail time in certain cases. Drivers who have been accused of drunk driving retain the right to have their interests protected in court and are free to optimize the available help to obtain the best possible outcome.
