Nonprofit board member facing a DWI charge in California

Having felony charges of any kind on one's record could have a devastating effect on that individual's career and personal life. The public often finds a person facing a DWI charge guilty long before that person has had the opportunity to defend himself or herself in a court of law. A California man who is serving on the board of a nonprofit organization that negotiates with landlords in support of homeless people was arrested recently for alleged DWI, along with hit and run.

In the early evening of a recent Tuesday, the 62-year-old man was reportedly driving along a freeway when the vehicle veered to the right-hand side, striking a barrier. He allegedly swerved to the left, smashing into another vehicle that then crashed into the left side barrier. The man continued and later stopped in a public parking area. Witnesses who had followed him detained him while awaiting law enforcers. The female driver of the second vehicle sustained only minor injuries.

A patrol officer reported that the man showed various signs of intoxication and that the results of a sobriety test allegedly revealed the concentration of alcohol in his blood was over the legal limit, which is .o8 percent. A colleague at the nonprofit stated that the board will discuss the matter and come to a decision about the man's continued membership. He stated that the accused had been providing a colossal community service, and it would be sad to lose him.

Any California resident facing a DWI charge has the right to have his or her interests protected and remain innocent until prosecutors present enough evidence to prove the accused's guilt beyond any reasonable doubt. As a means of attaining an agreeable outcome, the accused may have the opportunity to negotiate for a plea agreement. This often limits the penalties for a guilty plea to specific charges, according to the agreement.
