California man facing DUI charge after car accident

Facing a DUI charge may be a confusing time for some California residents. For those facing a first time offense, they may not understand their rights or how to best handle the situation. Unfortunately, in some cases where people are facing a DUI charge, it is because of a serious accident. That could be the case in a recent accident in which a woman was killed.

The crash occurred when an alleged drunk driver hit a tree with enough force to split his vehicle in half. As a result, his passenger, described as a woman in her early 20s, was killed. After the vehicle split, the passenger's side crossed into another lane of traffic and was hit head-on by an oncoming car. Although rescue workers were able to free her using the jaws of life, it was estimated she was trapped for a minimum of two hours.

The driver in question, described as a male in his early 20s, was ejected from the vehicle and received injuries that caused the need for medical treatment. He was transported to a nearby medical facility as were the driver and passenger that hit the other half of the man's vehicle. Their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening. The investigation is still ongoing and charges are pending dependent upon toxicology reports. While the man could be facing serious charges, it is important to note that the toxicology report could impact the man's charges.

As the man continues to face potential charges, he may be best served to review his rights under the California state laws. When facing a DUI charge, understanding one's rights as well as the best action to take in order build a strong defense. Even if a person is found guilty, options for a lighter sentence may be available if the proper actions are taken.
