Odom charged with driving under the influence in California

Driving under the influence is a charge that can often come with a stigma. Unfortunately, when the situation is played out in the media, the public can often pass judgment based only on the facts reported. Recently, Lamar Odom was arrested in California for driving under the influence.

Lamar is no stranger to media coverage. He is a professional basketball player in the NBA, although he is currently a free-agent. He's also been seen on a hit reality television show. Last weekend, he was pulled over at approximately three in the morning while traveling 50 mph, which is under the speed limit, on a local freeway. According to officers, Odom was weaving in the lanes before he was pulled over.

Upon making contact with Odom, officers reported he was unable to perform field sobriety tests. Allegedly, he refused any type of chemical tests. All information leading up to the arrest as well as the specific details of the arrest could be important as this case moves forward. It was not noted if this was Odom's first offense.

Any California driver facing charges for driving under the influence may benefit from having an understanding of their rights under the applicable state laws. Although not every person will be found innocent, there may be options available for first time offenders. At times a person could receive a plea deal or a lighter sentence depending on the circumstances surrounding the arrest. Having an understanding of all options and one's rights can help a person move forward with the knowledge needed for the best possible outcome.
