California driver facing DUI charges after accident

Most California drivers are probably aware of serious repercussions that could occur when someone faces DUI charges. When a tragedy occurs, the public can be quick to judge the accused, but it can be important to remember everyone is innocent until proven guilty. A recent accident has left a man facing DUI charges after he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

The accident occurred when a young man drifted off of the roadway and struck an elderly couple that was walking. They were reportedly walking in the same direction as traffic so their backs were to the vehicle before it struck them. The 79-year-old man and the 78-year-old woman were said to have been walking that road for approximately 30 years. They were both pronounced dead at the scene.

The 20-year-old driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. While this is unarguably a tragic event, it is important to note that he was arrested on suspicion and no charges have yet to be filed. An ongoing investigation will bring to light more facts and help determine the final charges, if any, placed against the driver.

Any California driver facing DUI charges may benefit from having an understanding of their rights under the applicable state laws. Taking a proactive approach could also prove beneficial when moving forward with a defense. Even if found guilty the accused can potentially receive a plea bargain or a lighter sentence dependent upon the circumstances. Because of this reason, having extensive details of the accident can be helpful.
