California man suspected of driving under the influence

A 62-year-old California man has been arrested following a collision with a cable car in San Francisco. According to reports, the accident occurred close to Union Square at Geary and Powell streets. The man's SUV allegedly collided head-on with the cable car. Police have arrested him under suspicion that he was driving under the influence.

There were around 15 passengers on the cable car when the accident occurred. The only person possibly injured in the collision was the 43-year-old operator of the cable car, who reported that his shoulder was in pain. Witnesses were said to have detained the SUV driver until police arrived. It was not disclosed whether field sobriety tests or a Breathalyzer exam were performed at the scene.

Accidents can occur for any number of reasons, and being under the influence of drugs or alcohol is but one. In this case, there was no public mention as why police suspect that the driver of the SUV was under the influence at the time of the collision.

In California, anyone suspected of committing a crime has the right to be deemed innocent unless and until proven guilty. Though the identity of the driver was not immediately released, he no doubt will suffer stigma associated with being arrested. Driving under the influence is considered harshly in California, so those facing arrests or charges for DUI should be prepared to handle the journey ahead. Whether this driver was actually driving under the influence, suffered a medical condition, or lost control of his vehicle, he will still be required to answer the criminal allegations arising from this accident, which may require a strong support system to both protect his legal rights and fight for a favorable resolution.
