In California, child support is determined by a formula that considers a number of factors: each parent's disposable income, earning capacity of both parents, time spent with children, and other considerations. The final determination for child support is presumed to be correct unless it can be shown that the court's determination was based on inaccurate information.

Child Support Modifications
There are a variety of reasons why a child support modification may become necessary. In order for the court to approve a modification, it must be shown that one parent has experienced a change in circumstances, such as the following:
- Change in finances — up or down — from job loss, promotion, etc.
- Change in child custody or time share
